Open water swim
Open-water swimming is often the most daunting part of a triathlon, especially for newcomers. With cold water, tight wetsuits and murky lakes to contend with, it’s not surprising first-timers, not to mention more experienced athletes, can become panic-stricken in the water come race day.
However, by regularly putting into practice in our open-water sessions, and using the excellent open-water swim coaching and facilities in Boschendal and Squad sessions in Stellenbosch, there’s no reason why even the most nervous of swimmers can’t overcome their fears.
All of the 3YO’s coached sessions are modestly priced and professionally run, so your wallet won’t be hit hard on your quest to becoming a proficient open-water swimmer.
Safety first at Boschendal
Boschendal’s York dam, in Pniel (close to Stellenbosch) is typical of the many venues offering open-water swimming and coaching facilities. The open water swim sessions will be from September to May.
All fitness & levels are welcome. We mostly split into 2 groups:
Beginners: 300 – 800 meters
Advanced: 1 or 2 loops of 1300 - 2600 meters, occasionally time-trials.
You are welcome to bring your kids, although their supervision is your responsibility.
Most swimmers swim in a wetsuit, but you are welcome to swim without one. Bring flip-flops your feet will thank you.
Every Friday there is a farmers night market at the deli.
TIME AND PLACE OF THE SWIM?
Every Friday we have our open water swim at Boschendal. Gorgeous sunset mountain views are guaranteed. We gather at security gate 20 at Boschendal between 5:30 PM and 5:45 PM. The gate opens remotely so we only have a limited window of opportunity to enter the gate. Please be on time. Let us know if you are coming (or decide not to come last minute if you have notified us that you were coming so we don’t wait for you in vain) We will cancel the swim if there is less than 6 swimmers.
The swim is included in the BMT/Boschendal trail center membership. For drop in sessions we charge R50. We don’t accept any cash at the dam. You are required to use zapper to pay.
